Local Attractions

Stonethwaite is a walker's paradise, the perfect destination for those looking to escape the modern world. A short walk up the Langstrath Valley you'll find the popular swimming spots of Galleny Force, Fairy Glen and Black Moss Pot, with wonderful views of the fells on either side.

If your feeling adventurous you can head over Honister pass, where you'll find Honister Slate Mine with its many attractions including: mine tours, via ferrata and sky walk.

Continuing down the famous pass the Buttermere Valley opens up with some of the most spectacular scenery in the Lake District.

Seathwaite is a short drive or bus ride up the Borrowdale Valley and is a popular starting point to take on the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike.

Heading towards Keswick you'll have plenty of opportunity for those essential holiday snaps, as you follow the river, winding through the Borrowdale Valley. Derwentwater, Friar's Cragg, Catbells,  Ashness Bridge and Surprise view are just a few of the most photographed panoramas in the lakes.

There are so many walks in and around Borrowdale, you'll want to return again and again.

With regular rambler buses heading up and down the Valley, it's possible to hike to Keswick, taking the high route over the tops or along the valley floor, then catch the open top bus back to Stonethwaite road end. If you only want to walk halfway you can catch the ferry across the lake to Keswick. Buses also run to Buttermere over Honister Pass and again can be boarded from Stonethwaite road end.

For your evening meal why not try the Langstrath Hotel which serves excellent bar meals, and is conveniently located, only a short stroll from the doorstep.

As an alternative, just up the valley there are bar meals available at the Yew Tree pub in Seatoller, or for a cheaper option the youth hostel at Longthwaite also serves evening meals, and does take walk in's if they are not too busy.

'It is recommended to book ahead for evening meals at both the Langstrath and the Yew Tree.

Finally if you are hoping to see the illusive Cumbrian red squirrel, then Knotts View is the place for you. We have frequent visits to the feeders in the back garden, particularly in late spring/early summer. In 2024 we were lucky to have two litters of young reds visiting the garden to hone their skills. Hopefully 2025 will be another bumper year for the Stonethwaite reds.

There's so much to do and see, whether you're an avid rambler or just looking for a relaxing break in the beautiful surroundings of the Lake District.

All of the pictures on this website were taken by us, on our walks in the surrounding area and the village of Stonethwaite.
